A student at 80% attendance might have missed one week in October and been perfect since, or might have missed the last four sessions in a row. Those are opposite situations and the percentage hides the difference.

The number that matters is consecutive absences, and the threshold is two. One absence is life. Two in a row is the beginning of a pattern, and it is the last point at which a message still reads as concern rather than as a collections call.

Three rules that make a register useful

Mark late separately from absent. Chronic lateness and chronic absence have different causes and different fixes, and merging them into one column loses the only signal that distinguishes them.

Record it during the session, not from memory afterwards. Reconstructed attendance is confidently wrong, which is worse than missing, because you will act on it.

Have one automatic action. Two consecutive absences triggers one message. It is not a decision you make each time, it is a thing that simply happens, because a rule you have to re-decide weekly is a rule you will stop applying in November.

What the message should say

Short, factual, and about the student rather than the fee. Which sessions were missed, what was covered in them, and one concrete way to catch up. Nothing about payment. A parent who receives a warm, specific message about missed content usually resolves the payment question themselves, and a parent who receives a payment reminder disguised as concern notices immediately.

The join that makes it worth keeping

Attendance on its own is a list. Attendance next to the last two exam results is a diagnosis: the student whose marks fell before the absences started has a different problem from the one whose marks fell after.
