The usual response is escalation: warnings, then marks deducted, then a message home. It produces a short improvement, a decline back to the original rate within a month, and a worse relationship with exactly the students who need one.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Ch2>Find out which kind of not-doing it is\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp>Three very different students look identical in the register, and the same response is wrong for at least two of them:\u003C/p>\n\u003Cul>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Could not start.\u003C/strong> They opened it, did not know what to do, and closed it. This is the largest group by far, and punishment makes it strictly worse, because they are being penalised for the gap you were hired to fix.\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Ran out of time.\u003C/strong> Six subjects, all setting homework, plus school. A real constraint, and the honest fix is a shorter sheet rather than a firmer tone.\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Chose not to.\u003C/strong> The one everyone assumes is the whole population, and usually the smallest of the three.\u003C/li>\n\u003C/ul>\n\u003Cp>You can separate them with one question, asked privately and neutrally: \"Where did you get to?\" The answer is different in each case, and it takes thirty seconds.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Ch2>Remove the blank page\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp>Since the largest group cannot start, make starting impossible to fail: worked first step, an example at the top, or the same question type they saw in the session rather than a variation. The number of completed sheets moves further from this than from any consequence you can impose.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Ch2>Make it small enough that there is no excuse\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp>Four questions cannot be defended as \"too much\", and the excuse quietly disappears. A long sheet gives every non-doer a reason that sounds legitimate to them, to you, and to their parent.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Ch2>Where consequences do belong\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp>For the third group, the effective consequence is completion rather than punishment: the work is done, with you, in time that would have been theirs. Deducting marks conflates two things that should stay separate: what a student can do, and whether they did the task. A grade that reflects both measures neither, and it is the first thing to become useless when you need to make a decision from it.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Ch2>The message home that works\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp>Not \"he did not do his homework again.\" Rather: \"he has not been able to start the last three sheets. I think he is stuck on X, and we are working on it.\" A parent hearing a diagnosis helps.
