The result is normal and awkward: within one group, a student comfortably ahead of the syllabus sits next to one missing the prerequisites from two years ago. Teaching to the middle serves neither, and preparing three lessons a week is not sustainable for anyone who also has to eat and sleep.

Vary the task, not the lesson

The sustainable answer is one explanation and differentiated practice. You teach the same concept once, to everyone, at full difficulty, and then the practice fans out. This is a fraction of the preparation cost of three lessons and it captures most of the benefit, because what genuinely differs between your strongest and weakest student is not what they can be told, it is how much scaffolding they need to use it.

Three practical structures

Same question, different starting line. Everyone gets the same problem; some get it with the first two steps already written. They rarely complain, they rarely misbehave, and they leave at the end of the term. Whatever else you do, make sure every session contains at least one thing your strongest student cannot do immediately.

Know the spread before you plan for it

None of this works without a diagnostic. Guessing the levels in your group is guessing, and the students who most need scaffolding are frequently not the ones who look like they do. Fifteen minutes of prerequisite questions at the start of the term tells you where the spread actually is, and the plan follows from that rather than from an impression.

Sources

What Works Clearinghouse — Educator Practice Guides (US Dept. of Education)

OECD — Education and Skills

","TEACHING",[23,24,25,26],"classroom management","private tutoring","lesson planning","group teaching",2,"A tutoring group is rarely one level.
