Mechanical, high-volume, and nobody learns anything from you doing it by hand. The second is \u003Cstrong>diagnosis\u003C/strong>: why this student made this error, what it says about what they understand, and what they should do next. That is the part worth your evening, and it is the part currently squeezed out by the first.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Ch2>Where AI genuinely shortens the work\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cul>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Objective questions.\u003C/strong> Multiple choice, numerical answers, gap fills. Fully mechanical and reliably checkable.\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Grouping errors across the class.\u003C/strong> Hand it the wrong answers and ask what mistakes they represent and how many students made each. This is whole-class feedback assembled for you, and it is the single highest-value output, because the three most common errors are your next session.\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Drafting the comment you would write.\u003C/strong> You supply the diagnosis, it supplies the wording, you check it says what you meant. The judgement stays yours; the typing does not.\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Translating your comment\u003C/strong> for a parent who reads the other language.\u003C/li>\n\u003C/ul>\n\n\u003Ch2>Where it must not go\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp>Do not let AI decide the mark on a long answer, and do not send generated feedback to a student unread. Both fail the same test: nothing in a confident, fluent, wrong comment tells the reader it is wrong, and the student cannot catch it because they are the one who does not know. A wrong diagnosis sends a student to practise the thing they were already doing correctly.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Ch2>The honest split\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp>Let AI score and sort. Do the diagnosis yourself, on the sorted piles, which now takes twenty minutes instead of two hours. Then use it to write the words. The saving is large and it comes from removing the mechanical part, not from removing you from the judgement.
