Keeping an exam honest in a room you do not control

The reason to care about copying in a tutoring exam is not moral. It is that the exam was a measurement, and a copied paper corrupts the measurement: you plan the next month from results that describe a class that does not exist, and the student who copied is the one who pays for that later.

Design out most of it

Invigilation in a crowded room is difficult. Question design is not, and it removes more copying than watching does:

• Two versions with the same questions in a different order. Ten minutes of work, and neighbour-copying becomes actively harmful, which students discover quickly.
• Different numbers, same structure. Two or three variants of the numerical questions. A copied final answer is now visibly wrong and easy to spot when marking.
• Ask for the method, and give it marks. A copied number without working earns little. This also aligns the incentive with what you wanted to teach anyway.
• One question that requires the student's own data: their own earlier answer, their own chosen example. It cannot be copied because it is not the same question for two people.

Announce the rule once, apply it identically

Say what happens before the paper is handed out, in one sentence, and then do exactly that, including for the student whose parent you would rather not have that conversation with. An inconsistently applied rule is worse than none, because it teaches the room that the outcome depends on who you are.

The response that works

A quiet removal of the paper and a private conversation afterwards achieves more than a public confrontation, which turns the incident into a story and forces the student to defend themselves in front of an audience. And ask why: a student copying in a tutoring exam, which they or their family paid for, is usually telling you something about how far behind they have fallen.

Take-home papers measure something else

A paper sent home is not an exam and should not be reported as one. It is useful practice, and it is fine to set it, as long as nobody, including the parent, is told that the resulting number reflects what the student can do alone.
