Spotting the student who is falling behind before the exam does
By the time a bad result arrives, the decline started six weeks earlier. The signals that appear first, and the ones that are misleading.

A student rarely collapses in one week. The exam result is the last event in a sequence that began a month or more earlier, and almost every signal in that sequence is visible in the room if you know which one to look at.
The signal that comes first
Not marks. Marks are a lagging indicator: they hold up for weeks after understanding stops, because a student who has lost the thread can still succeed on routine questions by pattern-matching. What moves first is the willingness to attempt: blank spaces where there used to be wrong answers, homework handed in complete but only for the easy half, an exit slip left empty rather than answered badly.
A wrong answer is a student trying. A blank is a student who has stopped believing trying will work, and it precedes the mark drop by weeks.
Four early signals, in order of reliability
- Blanks replacing errors. The earliest and most reliable.
- Selective homework. Questions one to four complete, five onward missing, week after week. It is a map of where they stopped following.
- Moving to the back, or to a different group of friends. Social repositioning often precedes academic withdrawal.
- Absence. Genuinely predictive, but late: by the time attendance moves, the disengagement is well established.
The misleading ones
Quietness is not a signal; some of your strongest students are quiet. Not asking questions is not a signal either, because the students most likely to ask are the ones already following. Confident participation can even be a false reassurance, because a student who answers quickly is answering the questions they can answer.
What to do in the two minutes you have
Ask them to explain one thing to you, privately, after the session, and pick something from three weeks ago rather than today. You will locate where the thread broke in about ninety seconds, and it is usually earlier than either of you expected. Then teach that, not the current topic, and tell the student explicitly that this is what you are doing and why. A student who understands they are being backed up rather than held back will usually take it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the earliest sign a student is falling behind?
Blank answers replacing wrong ones. A wrong answer is a student still trying; a blank means they have stopped expecting effort to work, and it typically precedes the drop in marks by several weeks.
Is a quiet student a warning sign?
No. Quietness is a personality trait, not a signal; some of the strongest students are quiet. What matters is whether they are still attempting the work.
