Almost every study habit is a bet about how memory works. Most of those bets are wrong, and they are wrong in a consistent direction: they assume memory is a recording device. It is closer to a muscle that strengthens under strain and weakens without it.

Three stages, three different failures

  • Encoding. Getting information in. Fails when attention is divided, which is why studying next to a phone produces hours of work and little memory.
  • Storage. Keeping it. Fails through the ordinary forgetting curve, which spacing is designed to interrupt.
  • Retrieval. Getting it back out. Fails when a student has recognised material many times but never produced it unaided. This is the most common exam-day failure, and the one re-reading guarantees.

The bottleneck: working memory

Working memory holds only a few items at once. This is why a long instruction loses half its content, and why a student struggling with basic arithmetic cannot follow an algebra explanation that assumes it. The fix is not repetition. It is making the underlying step automatic so it stops consuming space.

Why understanding is not enough

Following an explanation is easy; reconstructing it a week later is not. The gap is why students report understanding a lesson perfectly and failing the test on it. Understanding is necessary and it is not sufficient: practice at retrieval is the missing half.

What this means in practice

Study in shorter sessions, separated by days. Test yourself before you feel ready, because the point is to find the gaps. Sleep between sessions, because consolidation happens then, not during the extra hour. And treat the feeling of fluency with suspicion: it tracks familiarity, not knowledge.
